Histories of Women in Music

Module code: W3111
Level 6
30 credits in autumn semester
Teaching method: Seminar
Assessment modes: Coursework

Women practitioners in music operate in all areas, but they’re less visible than male counterparts. Recent studies explore:

  • the diversity of women’s creative practice and experience in music
  • issues on race, class and trans and non-binary identity.

On this module, you’ll study women in music across genres, epochs and histories. You’ll draw on different disciplines to examine different performance and presentation styles. You’ll also develop your research and writing skills through a research project.

Module learning outcomes

  • Apply current and sophisticated methodologies in gender theory to the analysis of music
  • Critically evaluate arguments and assumptions pertaining to music’s relationship to gender across a variety of genres and historical epochs
  • Initiate and carry out a presentation that is informed by the critical methods and techniques explored in the module
  • Extend independent research skills and apply them to a written project
  • Communicate ideas about the gendering of music history and its canons to both specialist and non-specialist audiences
