This module invites students to consider their own emerging practice in the context of an ever-changing landscape related to the listening, production, distribution and consumption of music and other sonic media. Focusing on creating a personally sustainable practice by exploring royalities, income streams and copyright, the module will enable students to better articulate their activities to an audience and make steps toward a career path as a successful contemporary practitioner. Further, by exploring the history of musical media and the related effects upon music industries and practices and the role of technologies in contemporary music cultures from various perspectives, the module investigates, and prepares students for, creating and promoting work as well as anticipating how music industries might continue to evolve. Topics will include areas such as: creativity, curation, wellbeing, promotion, copyright, licencing, funding and income streams, audiences, consumption and listening practices, distribution, experimentation and sustainability.
