On this module, you’ll explore key inquiries that are central to the discipline of Film Studies through an engagement with examples of European cinema from the 1920s to the present day. This includes:

  • realism
  • national cinema
  • popular genres
  • authorship
  • ‘alternative’ or experimental film styles.

Using a series of case studies, you’ll learn to situate film texts according to their:

  • historical contexts
  • cultural contexts
  • social contexts
  • relevant theoretical debates.

You’ll also develop essential study skills, including skills in essay writing and in the critical evaluation of diverse theoretical approaches to film.

Module learning outcomes

  • Show some understanding of different approaches and critical debates in the field, at an introductory level
  • Trace some connections between European film texts and their wider (historical, industrial, cultural, or social) contexts
  • Summarise and explain the aesthetic and historical significance of one or more European film modes or movements studied on the course
  • Demonstrate appropriate time management, resourcefulness and skills in communication and self-expression in planning and conducting written analysis
