On this module, you’ll explore the foundational principles of film as a visual art form and gain key practical and analytical skills relevant to film (and screen) industries. You’ll explore historical and contemporary cinematic styles, forms and artistic traditions. You’ll learn how aesthetic choices in lighting, production design and mise-en-scène contribute to visual storytelling.
You’ll develop core practical skills relevant to visual storytelling, focusing on:
- lighting
- production design
- the role of the art department.
You’ll explore these elements through lectures, workshops and hands on practical sessions encouraging you to critically engage with the visual language of film. You’ll begin applying this to your own creative work, preparing you for progression into specialist production roles.
You’ll focus on teamwork, creative collaboration and industry-standard practices, which will enhance your career readiness and employability in:

- television
- advertising
- digital content creatio.
Module learning outcomes
- Demonstrate an understanding of major artistic and stylistic movements in film history.
- Identify, analyse and apply visual elements of film form, including mise-en-scène, lighting, colour, and production design using industry-relevant tools and terminology.

- Reflect critically on visual style and production practices in both film texts and their own creative work, linking these to industry expectations.
