This module focuses on supporting you in developing an understanding of the wider contributions made by education to citizenship and global citizenship. Through the module, you will explore issues such as democracy, law, human rights, the media, financial systems, sustainability and global development and how these contribute to a life-long dynamic development of citizenship. We will explore how different places, projects and initiatives contribute to a lifelong relationship with citizenship. We will explore questions such as: • What is citizenship? What are the roles and responsibilities of individuals? • What seminal theories of citizenship / education have contributed to our understanding? How/are these challenged globally? • How and where does citizenship contribute to education? How does education contribute to citizenship? • How or should we compare western thought about citizenship to ideas in other parts of the world?
Module learning outcomes
- Demonstrate a developing theoretical knowledge and understanding of differing theories and approaches with the field of the Education for Citizenship.
- Evaluate literature and scholarship underpinning differing theories of education.
- Apply theoretical knowledge and understanding of differing theories of citizenship and education from a number from different perspectives and viewpoints.
- Present, evaluate and interpret findings to develop a coherent argument effectively, clearly and fluently.
