Using Matlab/Simulink as tools, this module teaches you some theoretical concepts, design methods and practical topics in control engineering.

In this module, we aim to bridge the gap between University education and the ability and skills required in a real working environment. After reviewing feedback control techniques and concepts, you'll attend lectures on the most commonly used design methods and on good engineering practice.

Each student is assigned a unique design case study to complete. This is to mimic a consulting work in a company. Under the instruction of and guidance from the tutor, you'll complete a few different designs for comparison and present some analysis and make a recommendation in a final report.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 44 hours of contact time and about 106 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2023/24. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to COVID-19, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let our applicants know of material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
