In the theoretical particle physics group within the Department of Physics and Astronomy, we are broadly concerned with questions regarding the fundamental constituents of nature, notably matter and forces. Questions such as what is the origin of mass? Can we describe gravity on the quantum scale? Why did an asymmetry between matter and antimatter develop in the early universe and critically can we test any of these ideas at experiments such as the LHC or the Planck Satellite?
We have close ties with both the experimental particle physics group as well as the astronomy centre here in Sussex. However we also have links, through our involvement with the NExT institute, with particle groups at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL), Royal Holloway and Southampton University.
