School PhD Scholarships in the Department of Economics (2016)

The Department of Economics at the University of Sussex is seeking applications for Doctoral Scholarships in Economics. There are a maximum of three available. The Scholarship is offered for a maximum of three years, renewable on a yearly basis subject to satisfactory performance on the doctoral degree. Successful candidates will receive a full fee waiver plus a stipend of £8,500 per annum paid in three instalments in October, January and April. In addition, candidates are also permitted to undertake teaching on behalf of the Department to a maximum of six hours per week during term time. This will be paid at grade 6 of the University's Associate Tutor salary scale. The payment for teaching the maximum number of hours is approximately £6,342.00 per annum at current rates.

The Department of Economics has expanded in recent years intensifying the quality and depth of its established strengths in applied policy-relevant research. Alongside an expansion in faculty numbers to around 30 we have also invested heavily in our PhD programme, which now comprises over 50 doctoral students.

Eligibility

Applicants with an interest in pursuing a PhD in any of the above areas are invited to apply. Candidates must hold at least a UK upper second class honours degree in Economics, and must also hold a good Master's degree in Economics, or equivalent qualification if a non-UK applicant. A minimum merit pass is usually required for the Master's degree.

Proof of proficiency in English is also required, ie, an IELTS certificate taken within the last two years showing at least 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each of the four sections.
