Dr. Peng's research interests are in IC engine combustion, performance and emissions control, in particular engine in-cylinder flow and combustion diagnostics, fuel injection and heat transfer. His work has contributed to significant progress in a number of areas including: HCCI combustion on gasoline engines and diesel engines, gasoline lean combustion and stratification combustion, the characterisation of diesel spray, the effective use of exhaust gas recirculation on diesel and gasoline engines. Those works include experimental investigations and numerical simulations.

Meanwhile he is involved some interdisciplinary researches focused on the car of the future, hydrogen fuel cell, hybrid vehicle, carbon capture and storage, control systems of powertrain and emission aftertreatment.

Current research projects including SCODECE, RC-EER and PEMFC Internal Flow are mainly financially supported by EPSRC, EU and some industry partners, such as AVL, WDL, BP, Ford Motor Company.

Visiting scholars and PhD students are welcome to join his research. PhD student scholarships are normally available for EU citizens. He is willing to assist other overseas students to obtain PhD scholarships and living maintenance.
