On this module, you’ll explore the key rules and principles of adult family law. You’ll focus on:
- rules on marriage
- unmarried cohabitation and civil partnerships
- domestic violence
- divorce
- child support
- financial provision on divorce
- different methods of family dispute resolution.
Through theory and practice, you’ll cover:
- core ideas in adult family law, such as autonomy, privacy and freedom from discrimination
- the application of family law rules in social and political contexts
- critical reflections on family relationships and how they should be regulated in law.
Module learning outcomes
- Systematically explain, analyse and apply the important legal principles and rules affecting adult family law.
- Systematically explain and analyse the most important policy considerations that underpin the rules and principles governing adults sharing a family life
- Present a reasoned argument in which the rules of adult family law are applied
- Demonstrate the ability to initiate and undertake independent research to develop critical perspectives on adult family law
