Jayden’s story

My tutors and coaches have been so encouraging, and no matter which path I choose, I know I have their backing.” Jayden Prempeh

Great Britain American Football Player and sports scholarship recipient

“English Literature has always been a big part of my life, but discovering Drama in Year 10 changed everything. It really built my confidence, which has been transformative for me.

I grew up in London, so I was keen to join a campus university. Visiting Sussex on an Open Day confirmed my decision, and I soon found myself at the Fresher’s Fair, signing up to societies that would help me settle into university.

I enrolled on taster sessions for Hockey and Acapella, but American Football quickly became my whole world. I joined a great bunch of guys with so many different perspectives, and we’ve all become really good friends. Training every day isn’t always easy, but we keep each other accountable. I think there’s something beautiful in the way sport builds a community – all you have to do is keep showing up.

My coach encouraged me to apply to the Sussex Sports Scholarship Scheme halfway through my first year. I was accepted, which gave me access to a tailored training programme of performance and nutrition advice. I also got to play in BUCS, and received funding for kit like my football helmet. Living on campus meant that I was five minutes away from the gym, so I could head over for cardio or weightlifting twice a day. Falmer Sports Complex has also been a huge part of my journey, and I’ve learned so much out on the field.

These days, I also play in the summer leagues, joining teams like the Sussex Saxons, London Blitz and recently the Great Britain men’s team. I’ve had the greatest time meeting so many new players and travelling to games overseas.

Balancing sport with my studies isn’t easy, and it’s something I’m still trying to master! But I’m determined to finish my assignments and make the most of the English and Drama facilities, whether rehearsing in Silverstone or using the photography studios.

Whether sport or academia, everything I’m doing at Sussex feels like it’s leading to something. My tutors and coaches have been so encouraging, and no matter which path I choose, I know I have their backing.”
