‘I chose the Liberal Arts degree at Sussex because when I enquired about the different modules, the staff seemed flexible and open to student suggestions. I was home-schooled so I like to pick and choose the subjects that interest me – and I love studying all different things.

This year I’m doing modules on race and ethnicity in US history, and contemporary social policy. Next year it’s global history from the Global South, and far-right immigration politics. These are all topics that are very present.

When I saw that Sussex offered a Global International Learning Summer School Scheme at Korea University in Seoul for six weeks, I immediately applied for a scholarship and was over the moon when I found out I’d got it. I’d always been interested in Korean and Japanese culture. Sussex paid for my flights and gave me some spending money.

The summer school was a really good experience. I stayed on the university’s campus. I studied media and popular culture in South Korea for three days of the week, and then had time to myself to explore the city and go wherever I wanted. It was a good way to learn about the culture and some of the language. I also went to the North Korean border, which was a big highlight. From an observatory you can see into North Korea. You know there’s tension between North Korea and South Korea, but you don’t feel in danger when you’re there.

I like to involve myself with University life at Sussex, but I particularly like the Art Society. I’m the society’s welfare officer. We do life drawing sessions and other fun, art-related activities. I’m not good at art, but this is a nice way to relax and be away from your phone – which we all need to do sometimes.’
