Politics BA (Hons)
I first became interested in politics while studying art, where I used paint to express my ideas and frustrations about the world. This led to me exploring political theory and philosophy, and I became particularly passionate about the field of social politics because it affects all of us so deeply.
I worked incredibly hard at school because I knew education would be my way forward – my mum had moved to the UK from Zimbabwe in search of better opportunities, but growing up in a single-parent household meant that our finances were tight. One of the main reasons I applied to Sussex was the fact it offers so much financial and emotional support for low-income students, which was vital for me in my first year.
I think the faculty has been the highlight of my university experience so far. I’ve never felt so motivated and encouraged, and my tutors have become people I really admire. One of my lecturers suggested I sign up as a student ambassador, which has helped with my anxiety around meeting new people. Introducing myself and the university to potential undergraduates not only helps to boost their confidence, but has really helped me to come out of my shell.
Moving away from family can be tough, but the Student Support team here is superb, and I appreciate how much Sussex feels like a community. There are lots of opportunities to delve into new hobbies because there’s literally a society for everything, and you’re surrounded by so many creative people. I’ve rediscovered my love for art, media, music and fashion, and being so close to Brighton has enabled me to cultivate my own personal expression. Everyone here is so vibrant and so utterly themselves.
Throughout my time at Sussex, studying politics has become more than just an academic pursuit – it’s become a way for me to understand the systems that shape people’s lives, including my own, and to work towards meaningful change.
I’d love to say that my future involves me changing the world, but for now, I’m changing my own world – one module at a time. And I’m enjoying every minute of it.
