Anna’s story

Sussex is unique in that it fosters bravery and empowers you to pursue what you’re passionate about.” Anna Sahura
International Relations BA (Hons)
“I fell in love with the UK back in 2019, and from that moment on, it became my dream to study here.
I’m a perfectionist at heart, which has often made me afraid of choosing the wrong path. I initially considered studying Law, but when war broke out in my home country of Ukraine, my priorities shifted and I realised that International Relations was where I truly belonged – a field uniting my love of languages with my interest in history and politics.
Sussex felt like the perfect place for me to grow thanks to its global outlook and excellence in my field of study. There’s also such a sense of liberty in Brighton. Everyone is so different, so colourful and so diverse that it’s just a lovely place to be.
I began my journey on the International Year One programme at the Sussex International Study Centre, where I received a scholarship for academic excellence. My tutors were brilliant and helped me transition smoothly into my degree. Since then, I’ve enjoyed exploring specialist modules taught by lecturers who are genuinely passionate about their fields. Their support also gave me the confidence to navigate an internship with the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where I learned to apply my knowledge to real-world challenges.
Connecting academic study with practical experience has been one of the most rewarding parts of my studies, which I’ve also tried to embed within the International Relations Society. As Vice-President, I help fellow students connect with global affairs by coordinating visits to international embassies. We live in such turbulent times, so it’s fascinating to hear how each country approaches major issues like international security, energy and sustainability while building vital connections along the way.
I think Sussex is unique in that it fosters bravery and empowers you to pursue what you’re passionate about. My own journey has been complex but beautiful, enriched by the diversity of experiences and perspectives around me. Although my parents remain in Kyiv, I’ve found something very special here: a sense of belonging and a home away from home.”
