Spring teaching
On this module, you’ll build on your understanding of tort law in the context of sport.
This will include the civil liability of:
- participants
- coaches
- referees
- national governing bodies of sport.
By examining the connection between sport and criminal law, you’ll focus on:
- applicable offences
- the role of consent to violence in sport
- matters concerning public disorder
- racism
- hooliganism.
You’ll critically consider the liability for dangerous premises and events, focusing on stadium disasters and spectator safety.
You’ll also analyse employment contracts in sports, concentrating on the relationship between sportspeople and their employers.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 22 hours of contact time and about 128 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
