Exploring Professional Practice in Primary and Early Year Setting (X6603)

Autumn and spring teaching
This module will introduce you to the skills, knowledge and understanding required to successfully explore the nature of teaching, learning and children’s wellbeing with a Primary or Early Years setting.
You will be introduced to the perspectives of different stakeholders involved in early years and primary education including: teachers, early years professionals, school leaders as well as those involved in inclusion and diversity issues. You will explore the statutory frameworks within which schools, early years settings, teachers and fellow professionals operate. This includes the Teachers’ Standards, which you will work towards in your professional practice by the end of your undergraduate programme.
The module will include a minimum of 20 days of placement within an early years or primary setting. In the initial stages, you will be involved in observing, co-teaching, leading groups and individual learning at a minimum of 5 hours per day.
As the placement module progresses, you will move from leading groups of children to gradually building up to teaching whole groups in the last week of the placement. This will involve 5 hours of whole class teaching and 10 hours of professional duties (including observation and co-teaching). You will be challenged to develop skills in personal resilience, professionalism, communication, and reflection.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 18 hours of contact time and about 132 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2024/25. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
