Communication Skills for Practice (L5100)

Autumn teaching

This module will provide you with foundational skills for communicating with children, young people, adults and families in social work practice.

The module will introduce you to approaches to communication, in terms of theory, professional values, research, and evidence-informed practice. It will provide you with the opportunity for experiential learning, introducing creative and visual communication techniques. Through this, you'll gain confidence in your communication skills before beginning the first of your practice placements in the Spring term.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 15 hours of contact time and about 135 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2024/25. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
