Genomics and Bioinformatics (C7120)
15 credits, Level 6
This module will introduce you to the common types of genomic and proteomic data, stored in biological databases and available to life science researchers.
Working in small groups, you will learn how to access these data and how to use web-based tools to answer interesting biological questions.
You will learn:
- how to manipulate and analyse DNA and protein sequences
- how to model and analyse protein structures
- how to identify and interpret protein-protein interaction and pathway data.
You will also explore the general principles that underlie common bioinformatics and genomics methods. This will enable you to critically evaluate your results.
By the end of the module you will be confident in using a wide range of bioinformatics and genomic web-based resources.
20%: Seminar (Class)
70%: Coursework (Group presentation, Report)
30%: Examination (Problem set)
Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 27 hours of contact time and about 123 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2023/24. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to COVID-19, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let our applicants know of material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
