Autumn teaching
This module aims to provide an overview of what it means to be a feminist, and how feminism can help you better understand global development. We will do this by learning about different feminist approaches and applying them to a variety of development issues.
We will achieve this by:
- analysing how development is traditionally understood and the dominant discourses of development
- analysing the problems with these discourses
- looking at how these discourses are being challenged by feminist approaches
- considering whether, and how, these approaches can be used in (more) transformative ways.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 33 hours of contact time and about 267 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2023/24. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
