Tuition fees for home students (2017)

Home student fees: £9,250 per annum (2017/18 fee).

These fees are set by the University, but are subject to UK Government confirmation and to satisfying the Teaching Excellence Framework.

Tuition fees for returning home students (2017/18)

Tuition fees will rise to £9,250 for returning home undergraduate students for 2017/18 (in line with the maximum permitted by the UK Government.)

This fees rise is permitted by Office for Fair Access (OFFA) approval of our ACCESS Agreement and in accordance with the Scholarships, Fees and Living Costs information published in the prospectus each year when students applied to study with us. 

The rise equates to inflation as calculated by the UK Government.

Tuition-fee support for home students (2017 entry)

To assist new full-time home students studying for their first degree, a range of financial support has been announced by the UK Government:

  • you do not have to pay for your course yourself upfront
  • you can get a loan to cover the cost of your tuition, which you only start to pay back when you are earning over £25,725 a year
  • repayments will be made each month and will be a fixed percentage of income over £25,725, over a period of up to 30 years.

At the same time, Sussex has also launched an innovative First-Generation Scholars scheme.

Tuition fees for UK full-time students pay for your education costs (including both tuition and exams). However, in addition to tuition fees, you will need sufficient funds to cover living expenses, including costs associated with your course such as books and materials.

EU student fees: £9,250 per annum (2017/18 fee).

We expect that fees will increase in subsequent academic years as the Government reviews the fee levels.

Tuition fees will rise to £9,250 for returning EU undergraduate students for 2017/18 (in line with the maximum permitted by the UK Government.)

This fees rise is permitted by Office for Fair Access (OFFA) approval of our ACCESS Agreement and in accordance with the Scholarships, Fees and Living Costs information published in the prospectus each year when students applied to study with us. 

The rise equates to inflation as calculated by the UK Government.

Tuition-fee support for EU students (2017 entry)

To assist new full-time EU students studying for their first degree, a range of financial support has been announced by the UK Government:

  • you do not have to pay for your course yourself upfront
  • you can get a loan to cover the cost of your tuition, which you only start to pay back when you are earning over £21,000 a year
  • repayments will be made each month and will be a fixed percentage of income over £21,000, over a period of up to 30 years.

The UK Government has confirmed that EU students commencing their studies in September 2017 will be charged at the home fee rate for the duration of their course, even if the UK exits the European Union during that period.

Tuition fees for Islands students (2017)

Islands student fees: £9,250 per annum (2017/18 fee).

BMBS in Medicine for Islands students: fees in 2016/17 were £19,000 per annum. The fee for 2017/18 has not yet been confirmed and will be available shortly.

These fees are set by the University, but are subject to UK Government confirmation and to satisfying the Teaching Excellence Framework (see our terms and conditions for undergraduate students 2017/18).

We expect that fees will increase in subsequent academic years as the Government reviews the fee levels.

Tuition fees for returning Islands students (2017/18)

As permitted by OFFA approval of our ACCESS Agreement and in accordance with the Scholarships, Fees and Living Costs information published in the prospectus each year when students applied to study with us, tuition fees for returning Islands undergraduate students will rise to:

  • £9,250 for the 2017/18 academic year (in line with the maximum permitted by the UK Government.)

The rise equates to inflation as calculated by the UK Government.

Tuition-fee support for Islands students (2017)

Tuition fee loans are means-tested for Channel Islands and Isle of Man students, and may be subject to an upper limit of £9,250.

Tuition fees for overseas students (2017)

The information for each degree listed at Undergraduate courses 2017 shows if the standard lower rate or the standard higher rate applies:

  • standard lower rate and foundation year: £15,100 per annum (2017/18 fee)
  • standard higher rate: £18,750 per annum (2017/18 fee)
  • BMBS in Medicine: fees in 2016/17 were £28,000 per annum. The fee for 2017/18 has not yet been confirmed and will be available shortly.

Note that your fees may be subject to an increase on an annual basis (see our terms and conditions for undergraduate students 2017/18).

Tuition fees for returning overseas students (2017)

Overseas student tuition fees are set by Council for each year’s entry and the first year fee and annual inflationary increases (subject to rounding for administrative purposes) are set for the duration of the course at the outset.

All current cohorts of students have approved fee rises of 2.5% per annum.

Tuition fees for returning overseas undergraduate students will rise to:

  • £15,100 (standard lower rate)
  • £18,750 (standard higher rate).

The tuition fees shown above are for the academic year 2017/18.

For students admitted in September 2017, these fees are set to increase each year over the duration of the degree by 2.5% per annum (subject to rounding for administrative purposes and assuming you do not have a break in your studies).

Tuition fees vary depending on the degree course. If you consider changing course, you may wish to check with us what the new fee would be.

Before registering as a student, you must provide evidence of your ability to pay the fees and to support yourself financially.
