Assistance animals

If you have a disability or health condition that requires the support of a registered assistance dog, we have some rooms that are suitable for you.

  • Assistance dogs

Assistance dogs are dogs which have been trained by an organisation which is accredited by Assistance Dog International and/or The International Guide Dog Federation. You can see the full list of accredited organisations on the Assistance Dogs UK website.

Assistance dogs perform practical assistive tasks for their owners and/or alert them to lifethreatening medical conditions. Assistance dog owners have a legal right to bring their dog into accommodation because of the support they provide.

Whilst they undoubtedly provide emotional support to their owners, this is not their primary purpose.

  • Assistance animals in university accommodation

We are committed to making reasonable adjustments for our disabled students, which includes permitting registered assistance dogs in residences.

If you have a registered assistance dog, please ensure you include this information in your accommodation application. We will then get in touch with you directly to discuss the accommodation that is best suited to your needs.

Before we allocate any accommodation, we will require evidence/certification that your dog is accredited/trained as an assistance dog.

  • Emotional support animals and other pets

University accommodation is not an appropriate environment for most animals. Pets of any kind are not permitted in our residences because of the potential for damage to the accommodation, disruption to other tenants and the welfare of the animal.

In the UK, emotional support animals don’t have legal recognition in the way that assistance dogs do. Emotional support animals are legally considered pets and therefore we cannot permit them to be kept in our student accommodation.

If you bring pets into residences, you will be in breach of the terms of your licence agreement. You will be asked to remove the animal immediately and be at risk of being required to leave your residence.

How to request adaptations or adjustments

When you apply for accommodation via our online portal, there is a section that asks you to provide information about any disability or medical requirements you have. Please complete this as part of your application and we will take this into account when allocating you a room.
