Postcards from Brighton
Wednesday 18 March 11:00 until 16:00
University of Sussex Campus : Jane Attenborough Studio, Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts
Speaker: Isha Mudassar
Part of the series: Festival of Ideas
Postcards from Brighton is a digital photography exhibition that explores the city beyond its typical summer image. Created by second-year Media Production student Isha Mudassar, the work highlights Brighton during the quieter seasons, late winter and early spring, when the city feels reflective, intimate, and emotionally rich.
Living in Brighton as a student for most of the academic year, Isha experienced how the city transforms after summer. Through photographs of winter streets, returning light, student life, and Brighton’s alternative spiritual culture, the exhibition captures how warmth, creativity, and community persist even during darker months.
The work draws on seasonal rituals such as Valentine’s season, everyday student gatherings, and the calm, reflective atmosphere found in the Lanes and surrounding areas. Presented as a digital projection at the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts, the exhibition invites audiences to slow down and experience Brighton as a living canvas shaped by time, people, and shared moments.
The project aligns with the Festival of Ideas and Brighton Festival themes of light, ritual, creativity, and regeneration, while also celebrating the University of Sussex’s 65th anniversary through a student’s personal experience of the city. Postcards from Brighton offers a thoughtful, accessible look at how a place becomes a home, not through spectacle, but through everyday connections.
