An overview of the inter/multidisciplinary research activities

The Centre for Advanced Communications, Mobile Technology and IoT (ACMI), University of Sussex, conducts work related to the development of advanced communications, mobile technologies and the Internet of Things (IoT). Core elements of the research includes new wireless and optical communications and networking technologies for 5G, beyond-5G and 6G mobile communications, satellite communications and next generation WiFi, as well as communications and sensor technologies for automotive, automation and health/medical sectors and IoT. The ACMI Group is committed to working closely with industry and business, and to technology transfer as well as world-leading academic research. It benefits from close collaborations with a number of key players in industry, such as Samsung, Huawei, BT, NXP, Cobham Wireless as well as UK, European and International and relevant industry standardization and regulatory bodies.

The University of Manchester is ranked 29th in the world according to the latest QS World University Ranking, and the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) is 4th in the subject ranking amongst UK universities. The Department has 78 academic staff, 82 research staff, and 253 PhD students. It has a total active research grant value of £42M on a wide range of research activities including communications, signal processing, electrical power systems, power electronics and machines, control, micro-devices, nano-materials etc. The Communication System Research cluster has 9 academic staff with about 35 research staff and PhD students, and covers research on wireless network optimisation, communication theory, communication signal processing, antennas, RF devices, and radar systems.

It was created in 2017 as a common initiative of Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (CIÊNCIAS) - a Higher Education institution - and six private companies to support, potentiate and develop Research and Development and Innovation (R&D) activities of its seven associates, while, simultaneously enhancing CIÊNCIAS strategic partnerships with market and services companies, therefore creating a more challenging environment for research and innovation.

Beihang University is leading the Beijing Key Laboratory for Cooperative Vehicle Infrastructure System and Safety Control. The research team has established a wireless sensor technology research and development platform, a large-scale virtual driving and formation control simulation platform, a 5G intelligent connected vehicle control technical verification platform, and independently developed a series of core technologies for internet of vehicles.

Institute of Safety Science and Technology, Tsinghua university, is a multi-disciplinary institute focusing on the frontier research on public safety science and technology. The key research directions include scientific theory and methodology of disaster prevention, key technical solutions of disaster mitigation, emergency management and comprehensive integration. The institute undertook a number of national major and key research projects, e.g. National Science and Technology Support Program, 973 program, 863 program, 985 program and major research plan from the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
