Biography

I am a Visiting Research Fellow at the Department of Geography for the calendar year 2019. I am undertaking a postdoctoral research project that is concerned with the mapping of the British Empire. My project, 'Cartographic knowledge in the Webs of Empire: Mapping British Settler Colonies in Britain in the Mid-Nineteenth Century', examines the role of commercial map companies in building the visual cartographic culture of the British Empire. The focus is on the prominent Arrowsmith map company, the knowledge networks that underpinned the making of maps and their diverse contexts of use in Britain and in the colonies. The project is funded by the Osk. Huttunen Foundation (Finland).
