Neurodegenerative Disease and Ageing Research Centre

Welcome to the Neurodegenerative Disease and Ageing Research Centre

With 16% of its population being over 65, Europe has the world’s highest proportion of older persons in the world and this is going to increase to 25% by 2030.  At the global level, the over 60s are projected to constitute 15% and  20% of the world population by 2025 and 2050, respectively.

There is a strong link between age and the neurodegenerative diseases, and thus the number of people suffering from these conditions is constantly on the increase. The existing treatments for neurodegenerative diseases, on the other hand, are limited and they mostly treat the symptoms rather than the causes. Thus, the importance of research into this group of diseases is paramount.

As part of our efforts towards healthy aging, leading scientists in the Neurodegenerative Disease and Ageing Research Group at the University of Sussex are applying a range of established and novel approaches towards understanding the molecular basis of and devising effective treatment for neurodegenerative diseases.
