Deforestation-Mining-Climate Change: The Saranda Forest in Jharkand and Niyamgiri Hills in Odisha

Zuky Serper and Vinita Damodaran

As part of Climate Justice Week 2021, Zuky Serper and Vinita Damodaran discuss two case studies of lush forests in India under the stress of mining, where indigenous forest dwellers are caught in the cross-fire between companies/government, and climate change. Damodaran presents the environmental history of Saranda Forest in Jharkand. Serper will tell a visual story – using GIS technology – about the Niyamgiri, where grass roots people’s movement and international solidarity saved the mountain from mining in 2013.
