Teaching

My teaching focuses on the art and architecture of the Islamicate world, examining questions of production, transmission and reception through the close examination of sites and objects. I have an interest in particular in places that express a history of mixed religious and cultural identities, borderlands and contact zones. I teach on topics including object histories of the Islamicate world, the art and architecture of the medieval western Islamic world,  on heritage issues in the Middle East, and on the transmission of objects and images in the Mediterranean.

At Sussex I teach the specialist finalist course 'The Order of Things: Collecting the World at the Victoria and Albert Museum' which takes a detailed look at the Islamic collection at the Museum and how it arrived in London. I teach an MA module Entangled Histories of the Medieval Mediterranean. I am the convenor of team taught modules and electives in the Art History department.
