My research interests lie in the area of human rights in theory and practice; legal theory; political theory; feminist theory; autonomy; legal and political subjectivity; the European Convention on Human Rights; Islamic dress; secularism; cosmopolitanism; Habermas' Theory of Communicative Action. My research interrogates human rights discourse using Habermas' concept of distorted communication, specifically in relation to the issue of Islamic dress in the context of the European Convention on Human Rights. Concluding that human rights discourse is an inherently distorted discourse, I consider imagining a reclaimed, regenerated notion of both human rights and autonomy which can create a space for resistance.
