Biography
I came to Sussex University from a post managing IT within University College London to study for a D. Phil in the Department of Cognitive and Computing Sciences.
After completing my D. Phil, I joined IT Services to manage and develop a project setting up a user registration system, which has lead to my involvement in a number of authentication and authorisation projects within ITS.
I then moved on a role as Senior Systems Developer on the Sussex Direct project where I developed a number of sub-systems within the overall Sussex Direct architecture, using PHP and Oracle PL/SQL.
Work on Sussex Direct lead on to my involvement with e-learning and my current role of Head of Learning Systems within IT Services, and has given me a broad overview of data at Sussex.
I have been active in bringing funding into the University through successful bids for funding from JISC.
Role
I am Head of Learning Systems in IT Services.
This involves two main areas of responsibility. First of all, I am responsible for ensuring that the development of our online learning system meets the needs of students and staff. We have a particular interest in improving the user experience of our Moodle-based online learning system, Study direct.
I also have responsibility for managing developments around audio-visual and multimedia tools, where we are currently focussing on lecture capture and media management, and in the design of teaching spaces.
