Gender and Media

MA

1 year full-time
2 years part-time

The MA in Gender and Media focuses on the production and reception of powerful media understandings and representations of masculinity, femininity and sexuality. It explores a growing intellectual area, which opens into some of the key social, cultural and policy issues of the present day.

The programme provides perspectives and information for people either already in the media field or wishing to enter it, or in any occupation where gender awareness would be an advantage. Drawing on the strengths of the gender studies and media studies faculties at the University of Sussex, this MA is one of only a few of its kind in the UK.

Admission requirements

Students normally have a first degree or comparable experience. For further information on admission and IELTS/TOEFL requirements, please refer to Applications and selection.

Funding

Please refer to Awards for graduate studies.

Programme structure

The MA contains two core courses, which introduce conceptual frameworks, particularly from feminist, postmodern and queer theory, and explore key case studies. The option courses aim to strengthen the grasp of theory and methodology, allow for exploration of key gender issues that span a range of media forms, or lead to analysis in depth of one kind of media.

Autumn term: you take two core courses Gender and Representation and The Politics of Gender.

Spring term: you take two options from a list which has previously included: Feminism and Film; Gender, Nation and Identity; Media Audiences; Media Theory and Research II; and Queering Popular Culture.

Summer term and vacation: you undertake work on the MA dissertation under faculty supervision.

Assessment

All courses are assessed by 5,000-word term papers. You are also required to submit a dissertation of 20,000 words.
