Galaxies and the Cosmos

Module code: F3305
Level 5
15 credits in spring semester
Teaching method: Lecture, Class
Assessment modes: Unseen examination, Coursework

On this module, you’ll get an overview of the properties of galaxies, their spatial distribution (large-scale structure) and the nature of the Universe as a whole (cosmology). This includes:

  • galaxies: morphology and spatial distribution, and formation and evolution
  • cosmology: observational evidence, the Big Bang and inflation, Friedmann equations and dark energy.

Module learning outcomes

  • Have knowledge of and be able to critically evaluate the principal observational properties of galaxies.
  • Explain how these observations inform our physical understanding of galaxies, groups/clusters of galaxies, and the Universe.
  • Apply physical laws to make calculations that relate the observed properties of systems to their underlying physical properties.
  • Have a broad understanding of the key cosmological and astrophysics process that give rise to galaxy formation and evolution.
