Geography
Southeast England Field Class
Module code: F8515
Level 5
15 credits in spring semester
Teaching method: Seminar, Fieldwork
Assessment modes: Portfolio
Globalisation suggests that distance no longer matters and anywhere is within reach. Yet, overseas field teaching and air travel have high environmental costs. In response, this field-course module focuses on geographies surrounding the university.
This ‘local’ acts both as a window into broader, global processes and as its own subject of study. Through online seminars and local fieldwork, you’ll explore the diverse landscapes of Sussex – rural, urban, human and physical.
You’ll focus on three overlapping themes:
- continuity and change in urban forms
- rural heritage and environmental politics
- coasts, cliffs and conservation.
Module learning outcomes
- Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the nature of the relationships and processes that shape the geographies of south-east England.
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the principles and practices of developing research projects to deploy in the field.
- Demonstrate an organised approach to the design, execution and writing up of research.
- Recognise and critically evaluate the importance of understanding the geographies of our immediate environs and contexts.
