Level 4
30 credits in spring semester
Teaching method: Lecture, Seminar, Workshop
Assessment modes: Coursework

Have you ever wondered why language offers us so many different ways of asking for a favour or turning down an invitation?

In this module, students build on their knowledge of linguistic structure from ‘From Sounds to Words’ to develop specialised knowledge in the areas of grammatical structure and the structure of conversational interaction, exploring the intersections between the two.

As well as serving as an introduction to grammatical and interactional structure, the module focuses on data collection and analysis, providing students with university-level data analysis and presentation skills, preparing them for original research.

Module learning outcomes

  • Define and explain basic concepts in grammatical analysis and interactional analysis.
  • Implement this knowledge in the analysis of natural language data.
  • Select appropriate methods of data collection for language analysis.
  • Form hypotheses and use evidence to test hypotheses.
  • Present a motivated methodology and a coherent argument.
