Autumn teaching

On this module, you research and write a dissertation on a subject of your choice. Having chosen your research topic in consultation with a supervisor, you work under the guidance of your supervisor.

Teaching is seminar based. The seminars are designed to equip you with the research skills required to complete yout dissertation. Topics covered include:

• research methodology
• writing up
• advanced word processing
• researching online.

You submit a research proposal to your supervisor and receive feedback on this. You also present your research proposal to your tutor and fellow students. The module seeks to develop, among others:

• the skills of independent research and learning
• good time management
• the ability to reflect on progress
• an appreciation of the value of constructive criticism.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 12 hours of contact time and about 138 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2023/24. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
