Industrial Automation Systems (H7121)
15 credits, Level 5
Spring teaching
On this module you’ll gain the knowledge and understanding of key mechatronic concepts including mechanics, pneumatics, electrical, electronics and informatics. You’ll focus on industrial applications, including the study of on-off control, programming using Programmable Logical Controllers (PLCs), control of robotic arms and machine vision.
You’ll also consider mechatronics systems as an integration of various subsystems, and you will be able to analyse, model, design, program and cost automated manufacturing systems through the integration of such subsystems.
You will also be familiarised with interpretation of technical information, including representation of components using diagrams and circuits, and general safety of operating robotic/mechatronics equipment.
Teaching
46%: Lecture
54%: Practical (Laboratory, Workshop)
Assessment
35%: Coursework (Group submission (written), Practical assessment)
65%: Examination (Unseen examination)
Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 48 hours of contact time and about 102 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2023/24. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to COVID-19, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let our applicants know of material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
