History Thematic Course: Awakenings (V1468)

Spring teaching

This module uses Muslim histories, 1450-2011, to explore and critique the theme of ‘Awakening.’

You will begin with religious, political, and cultural revivals that occurred within and between the early modern Ottoman, Safavid, and Mughal empires (1450-1800).

You then shift to the modern period through an exploration of the nahda, a cultural revival in the eastern Mediterranean, and the historiography relating to the ‘awakening’ of the Arab nation.

Further topics will vary between years and according to student interest, but may include:

• the rise of Wahhabism in 1700s Arabia
• the impact of Indian Ocean trade on Mughal art
• twentieth-century Islamic revivalism
• the Arab Uprisings of 2011.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 33 hours of contact time and about 267 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2022/23.
