Autumn teaching

This module provides an introduction to the legal rules determining what it means to own land and/or other rights that relate to land.

You will cover aspects of the law forming the framework of landholding in England and may include:

• the doctrines of estates and tenure
• the meaning of land (fixtures)
• the distinction between personal and property rights
• the role of equity and the trust and the doctrine of estoppel
• the contractual formalities for buying an interest or estate in land
• acquiring ownership rights, including the rules of adverse possession
• unregistered and registered title.

You may also cover topics such as leases (and licences) or mortgages to explore the application of the rules in a particular context.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 25 hours of contact time and about 125 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2022/23. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
