Autumn teaching

Sexuality and sexual politics are central to social life. On this module, you will explore, assess and apply intersectional and queer approaches to issues surrounding sexuality and its entanglement with gender, race, ability and other vectors of power. You will engage with cases of sexual politics, from LGBT demands for rights and inclusion, to queer anti-assimilation activism, to LGBT asylum seeker claims.

These cases, together with theoretical and empirical endeavours around topics such as sexuality, space and the body; homonationalism; sexual violence; compulsory heterosexuality and homonormativity, will enable you to analyse the social importance of the intersections of sexuality from a sociological perspective. You will be invited to apply your learning to your own empirical research and lived experience.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 33 hours of contact time and about 267 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2022/23. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
