Sports Law 1 (M5029)

Autumn teaching

The module will cover the subject of sports law with reference to national, regional and international regulatory systems.

In its introductory part, the module will address historical aspects of sports law, which led to the establishment of dedicated governing bodies.

On issues of integrity, the module will consider match-fixing in sport and comparative aspects of anti-doping regulations.

The module will also involve a review of the European dimension of sports law, and the impact of fundamental freedoms in the relevant regulatory framework. This will include an analysis of the impact of competition rules and media laws on the broadcasting of sport.

Moreover, intellectual property matters will be addressed, with reference to the branding and marketing of sports personalities and events.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 20 hours of contact time and about 130 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2020/21. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
