Autumn teaching

Gender Politics and Social Research is a core module on the MA Gender Studies. It aims to broaden and deepen your engagement with feminist methodology and theory, develop you as an autonomous researcher, and prepare you to design and carry out ethically engaged, reflexive research. In order to do this, we will study a range of theoretical, methodological and ethical perspectives in feminism and gender studies (which includes queer and trans studies).

We try our best to take an intersectional and anti-colonial approach, which we see as a mindset and a process, not a matter of representation and not a destination.

This module will be taught face to face within a 3 hour weekly seminar. Each seminar will involve a mini lecture and group activities and lots of discussion.

• explore how theory might be applied in social research
• think critically about feminist contributions to research methodology
• evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of different research methods.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 30 hours of contact time and about 270 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2023/24. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
