Doing Gender in Theory and Practice (350D7)

30 credits, Level 7 (Masters)

Spring teaching

“Doing Gender in Theory and Practice” is geared towards students who will soon be taking up jobs working on gender, sexuality and development issues in a wide variety of organisations across the world.

The module will familiarise you with the literature on gendered institutions, gender regimes and how gender power dynamics operate within informal spaces and in formal organisations and systems. You will learn and develop practical tools and strategies to analyse gender equality issues in organisations.

You will become familiar with using the Gender at Work Framework and explore how the Framework has been applied to develop program interventions in variety of institutional settings around the world.

The main skills that we will develop, across each session of the ‘Doing Gender’ module, include:

  • understanding factors that limit or enhance the capacity of individuals and organisations to act as ‘change agents’
  • organisational and programme analysis, using the Gender at Work Analytical Framework; this includes identifying and understanding ‘deep structures’, ‘social norms’ and ‘gender regimes’
  • power analysis and gender-aware planning, including entry points for change
  • strategic evaluation and learning for gender equality.

We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2023/24. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
