Re-imagining Humanitarian Responses to Displacement (010GRS)

Spring teaching

On this module, you’ll get introduced to recent thinking on responding to displacement.

  • Part 1 (weeks 1-3): you’ll interrogate the hegemonic responses mandated by powerful global institutions and state actors, and the shortcomings of this ‘global response’.
  • Part 2 (weeks 4-6): you’ll investigate ‘new’ actors and modalities in responding to mass displacement.
  • Part 3 (weeks 7-10): the module adopts an applied approach.
You’ll get an introduction to design-thinking. You’ll apply your knowledge of current responses to mass displacement to reconfigure the way in which resources are (re)distributed to displacement-affected populations. The module concludes with a consideration of what is needed to bring about change in global responses to mass displacement.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 30 hours of contact time and about 270 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2023/24.
