Dissertation with Placement (Global Studies) (003L7)

45 credits, Level 7 (Masters)

Summer teaching

This module is designed to allow you to apply theories and concepts, as well as practical and research skills learned during the MA programme.

It takes the form of a research placement and not a work placement, allowing you to carry out primary research for your dissertation while at an organisation in a field relevant to your dissertation. This is normally undertaken from June – August, lasts for a minimum of 6 weeks, and is an integral and assessed part of the module.

It is the student’s responsibility to identify suitable organisations for their placement. Once an organisation has been identified, support is available within Global Studies to help with the process until the placement begins.

This option is intended as an alternative to the standard research-based dissertation.

Assessment

100%: Written assessment (Dissertation)

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 450 hours of work. This breaks down into about 450 hours of contact time. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2023/24. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
