New Shut Up and Write Sessions

Shut Up and Write is an event that offers students the chance to come together for a fixed amount of time and write independently. You can choose to attend as often or as little as you like. The sessions run for two hours every Sunday afternoon between 1- 3pm in the Teaching Room on the ground floor of the Library.
Using the Pomodoro Technique, it is a great way to beat procrastination and get writing in a supportive, distraction-free environment. The idea is that writing is focused in three 30 minute intervals to provide structure, reduce task paralysis and reduce overwhelm.
There will be short, scheduled breaks in between the focused writing sessions to help keep you motivated and on-task. You can chat with other students, stretch your legs, or sit in silent reflection ready for the next 30 minutes – whatever works for you.
Although two hours doesn't sound like much, it is amazing what you can get done when you have the chance to focus. The aim is not to put pressure on yourself to be productive, rather, to help you carve out some dedicated time to write and to present a chance for social connection.
Whilst the sessions are titled Shut up and Write, you can work on any task: plan your weekly reading, work on essay plans, research, write code, complete admin tasks, as well as writing. Just bring along your notes and writing implements (whether pen and paper or laptop), and get started on your chosen task.
Everyone is welcome!
This event is open to all Sussex students and whilst it does not involve any teaching, Library staff will be on hand for support with any study-related queries.
