The workshop was intellectually productive and deeply engaging, setting out the different legacies of empire within Europe and their significance for constructions of nationalism and minority rights.

The workshop brought together research on the British overseas empire with imperial formations in central and eastern Europe.
Professor Gurminder K Bhambra, along with Dr Jan Balon from Charles University in Prague, organised and delivered a workshop in Prague in September on ‘Constructions of the (European) State in and after Empire '. The event brought together research on the British overseas empire with imperial formations in central and eastern Europe.
Other Sussex presenters included:
- James Hampshire, Professor in Politics:
(Post)Neoliberalism, Ethnonationalism, and the Migration State - Dr Aleksandra Lewicki, Reader in Sociology:
Ambiguities of Race and the Politics of Extraction - Dr Elizabeth Craig, Associate Professor in Law:
The League of Nations Minority Regime and the Legacy Problem
Dr Rahul Govind from Delhi University and Marketa Krizova from Charles University, Prague, also delivered presentations, with Professor Krizova ending the event by leading a '(de)colonial' walk through Prague.
Describing the event, Professor Bhambra said:
“The workshop was both intellectually productive and deeply engaging with papers setting out the different legacies of empire within Europe and their significance for constructions of nationalism and minority rights – truly pressing issues in the present.
It was a pleasure to spend two days with colleagues discussing these themes as well as being made aware of the deep entanglements of the city with various colonial histories in the walk led by Professor Krizova.”
The workshop was funded by Charles University, the Czech Academy, and the University of Sussex
