Sussexsport's One World Week celebration of all things international from 18 March

For One World Week (OWW) this year, Sussexsport is once again organising the famous Active US annual Holi Run on 20 March, a non-competitive run around Stanmer Park, finishing at the famous Holi celebration in Library Square. Tickets are just £5, and for this you will receive a free goody bag and powdered paint!

In addition to this, the wider Sussexsport team are soon to launch a OWW poster and interview campaign of international students, part-funded by One World Sussex. Sussexsport’s theme this year is students’ personal and cultural attitudes towards sport, and how international students find playing sport in the UK.

As Izuchukwu Anugwom, a student from Nigeria, said during interview: “It’s [sport’s] a uniting factor, it brings people from different tribes together, different cultures and identities.”

The fantastic photographs, which will be displayed around campus during OWW from Monday 18 March, were taken by Stuart Robinson, the University photographer, who was vital to the success of the project.

Stuart said: "It was great to have the opportunity to take portraits of the students for this project. The enthusiasm for their involvement in a variety of sports at Sussex really shone through."

Included with the photographs will be quotes from the students about their experiences of sport back home and in the UK, and how sport has helped them to grow as people, and enabled them to find common ground with students from all over the world.

Coordinator of the project, Rose Wilmot, said: “All of the students who took part had something unique to say about their cultural experiences of sport, and it was truly a pleasure to hear about their lives and their backgrounds.

“I was also particularly moved that, without exception, they all felt Sussex was a place where they had been accepted and supported, and that at Sussex they had the opportunity to meet students from a rich variety of backgrounds which they might not have had elsewhere.”

She went on to thank Stuart and One World Sussex for their guidance, support and contribution to the project and to the students for their time and promptness in responding to requests for quote and image approval.

“One World Week is such a fantastic part of the University of Sussex calendar and we are really excited, and grateful to the One World Sussex panel, that we are able to contribute to it even more this year.”

Helen Quin, International Student Support Officer and member of the OWW funding panel, said: “One World Sussex is proud to collaborate with Sussexsport on this initiative to celebrate the achievements and stories of our international students in sport.”

The posters will be on display at the Sport Centre, Falmer Sports Complex and Jubilee building, and on social media from Monday 18 March, so please keep your eyes peeled.
