Nearly 500 students completed pre-sessional programmes at the Sussex Centre for Language Studies (SCLS) this summer, a 40% increase on what was already a record year in 2010.
Pre-sessional courses are 10-week and five-week courses to prepare international students for study in UK higher education.
The vast majority of these students will now progress to a range of Masters degrees at Sussex (notably in Business, Management and Economics; Global Studies; and IDS), with smaller numbers bound for undergraduate programmes and doctoral research.
The Centre has also delivered its customary range of English-language, teacher-training and teacher-development courses:
- students from a number of partner institutions in Japan attended the Summer at Sussex programme, which ran throughout the summer;
- in July and August primary and secondary teachers sponsored by the Comunidad de Madrid attended teacher-development programmes; and
- for the fifth consecutive year, SCLS delivered its successful 'Introduction to English Teaching for Language Assistants' course.
