Following a recent spate of thefts, campus security services are urging staff and students not to park in the Stanmer Park area just outside the University's boundary.
The parking area - just after the yellow entrance barriers to the sports centre to the south of campus - is a target for thieves as it is not on University ground and is, therefore, not protected by its surveillance and security operations.
Roger Morgan, Head of Security, warns that parking in this unsecured area puts vehicles and their contents at unnecessary risk. He said: "Car crime on campus is very low indeed and parking costs only £1 a day.
"For that you get peace of mind that your vehicle is safer and more secure thanks to our CCTV network and security patrols."
Sussex Police have issued the following advice for Sussex staff and students, highlighting the risks of parking in an unsecured area:
- Car security - Make sure all the doors are shut properly and locked and the windows are completely closed. Even the smallest gap can be taken advantage of by criminals. If you have an alarm/immobilizer make sure it is in good working order, as this can raise the awareness of potential witnesses.
- Valuables - Always place small items out of view; these can be easily hidden under seats and in the glove compartment. Larger items should be placed in the boot or removed completely if practicable. It is imperative that the items are not visible through the window, as this instantly makes the vehicle a target for thieves.
- Parking areas - Try not to leave vehicles parked in dark out-of-the-way corners, as they provide obstructions favoured by criminals to conceal their activities. Obstructions can take the form of large trees, fences, walls and other objects large enough to provide cover.
