Evaluation Essentials Session 8: Qualitative Evaluation Data Collection
Wednesday 25 February 12:00 until 14:00
Online
Speaker: Jenny Diggins
Part of the series: Evaluation essentials training programme
Joing us for another Evaluation Essentials session.
This workshop is for staff who want to incorporate qualitative approaches into their evaluations. We’ll explore the core principles of qualitative methods, how they complement quantitative approaches, and why they’re valuable for understanding programmes and stakeholder experiences. While quantitative methods help us measure whether a programme has achieved its intended outcomes, qualitative approaches allow us to explore how and why change happens. They can provide insight into stakeholders’ experiences, perspectives, and reflections on what worked well and what could be improved.
The session will introduce core practical methods, including semi-structured interviews, group discussions, and participant journals, and we’ll also discuss key ethical considerations when collecting qualitative data. We'll also consider how open-ended survey questions can provide light-touch qualitative insights, while recognising their limits compared with more in-depth methods.
The session will be interactive, with short, hands-on exercises that allow you to practise turning survey questions into conversation prompts and experience a brief semi-structured interview.
By the end of the workshop, you will have:
- A clear understanding of when and why to use qualitative evaluation
- Greater confidence in core methods, including interviews, focus groups, and reflective journals
- Increased awareness of ethical challenges and practical ways to address them
Sessions have been designed in a way where you do not need to have been to other sessions to attend this one.
