Carol, based on Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Price of Salt explores the relationship of the young photographer Therese with Carol, a wealthy divorcée and mother. The film chronicles 1950s America, lesbian motherhood, and the temptations of escape.
Ellie Turner-Kilburn is a doctoral researcher in Gender Studies (Humanities) at Sussex. Her research focuses on the history of queer women as it is told in the present. Ellie is interested in 1950s lesbian pulp fiction and its continued rediscovery. Her thesis entitled “‘I love it when we play 1950’: The Role of Myth, Memory, and Nostalgia in Creating a Lesbian Fifties’” discusses Carol (2015), Pulp (Robin Talley, 2018) and the Tommy and Betty archive which is housed at the West Sussex Record Office.
